It keeps your skin out of the sun and out of direct contact with the 118° air. Just like how opening your visor makes you feel like you have a blow dryer to your face. In addition to that, while being all sweaty may be a bit gross, it's actually very useful. It keeps your body temp, and the temperature of the air inside your gear lower through the process of evaporative cooling. If you were in direct sun with no gear the sweat would be instantly gone. Think of it as the difference between getting out of the pool and being all wet, vs having sat in a deck chair for an hour. And then in you add a cool vest that's been thrown in the freezer for an hour... Really nice

I know it's nothing like it has been in Vegas, but it did get up to 110 up here in Boise yesterday.
