5/18/2014 - Mt. Potosi airplane wreck
Finally made it to the plane wreck.
It was a pretty tough hike up there.

Douglas Corporation DC-3.
Crashed in 1942 with 22 people on board.
No survivors.

After the crash, aluminum was melted on site to be carried out and reused. (Aluminum was in high demand during the war).
This is a piece of one of the burners used to melt the aluminum on site.

Nice pics, Ive known about this wreck from years ago but have never seen images till yours. Kinda makes you imagine what happened after the plane clipped the rocky edge up there and cartwheeled into the ground.

It didn't...it did clip the wing, but only feet before hitting the solid rock cliff wall head on.
Clipping the wing made no difference...fuselage hit straight against flat solid rock.

HHmm thats interesting to know that as i had heard that it clipped an edge and did a cartwheel kind of crash. Second hand word of mouth can be incorrect sometimes. Now i want to look into this even more now.

Thanks for the correct info on this Icon_thumleft
