Shawn/Sean (etchasketch)
Me
It all started with an idea. Iron Butt ride. With much debate on attending. Dayyum I am glad I did.
We met up at 4am to beat the desert heat. The most amazing thing happened this morning. We actually left ontime! And just like that our journey begins. We leave the darkness of vegas in our mirros and head up the 15 chasing the inevidable fireball rising in the east. Pursuing the mountains in an effort to keep the sun from rising and scorching us. Or maybe we were hopeless romantics prolonging the pretty sunrise? Running through the dessert has its mood swings in temperatures hot 1 minute and chilly the next. Being a rule set ride by the saddle sore association. We behave on our extreme sport bikes
And Tapper on his damn lazyboy. And proof below shows we in fact are behaving at a mild 72 mph. Ignore the cell phone use while riding. That shit is dangerous! And we do not endorse that kind of action in anyway shape or wait first a selfie!
First stop is St. George Utah. Pffff we got this. It ain't so bad. Fuel, hydrate and go. Back on the I15.
Easy going and timely. We make it to Beaver Utah for stop 2. The busiest gas station ever! We were like cockroaches in the light looking for an open pump! Hydrate and snack. Man we got this! On the road to Neephi. And we have or first issues.... this fat kid hasn't had a real meal yet. Trying to be as ready as possible. Keeping it light with granola and fluids! How are there any bugs left in Utah? Every stop was a struggle to clean visors. And Tapper has a huge screen on his lazyboy he has to clean. In and out of Neephi.
Now our first major encounter with traffic. We may or may not have filtered some traffic in Salt Lake City do to a freeway crash! That cost us valuable time. But hey we got all day right? Into Kaysville Utah. More fluids and a snack. Tapper needs caffeine cause he is to comfortable and I want to know when are we eating damnit! Oh by the way fist mechanical issue. Just a rear brake lever. Zip ties a pic and let's roll! It's starting to get warm out. And wouldn't ya know it were headed back north on the I15! But now we going to Idaho. A hop and a skip and we are halfway in Malad Idaho. And by golly that Burger King was one of the best whoppers I have had in a longtime! Time to rewind the tape and go home! 515 miles in the book!
Mosying back to Kaysville Utah. We got good spirits and jokes. The closer to home we get the cheaper the rescue vehicle will be! Now the struggles begin and Tom's minor temper! We're returning through the same gas stations. And now all of our cards are not working at the gas stations. Because we can only use them there once a day. Some of us whip out a different card. But not Tom. Tom has to go side. Then he back out to fuel. Then to a differnt pump. Then they mixed it all up with Tom and Tapper and pump and receipt and change. Oh boy now Tom is stomping around getting loud. But a little earlobe tickle and he is under control. Now i don't want to say anything about Mr. Navigator Tapper but he decided to test our mpg's. He tried radioing us about our fuel stop and Tom was talking about farts in the wind. And yep, we blow by our exit. Next town 30+ miles and the only turn about I saw. Had a state patrol sitting in it. So fuel conserve mode to Scipio Utah. We made it with no issues. Fuel, bustin balls and go! Now were burning onto a sunset. Now we are starting to feel the discomforts a little. Tapper has one complaint. His cruise control doesn't go as high as were allowed. The rest of us are getting a lil restless and achy. Back into Beaver Utah for a fuel stop and more hydration. The weather is starting to cooperate again. Until we hit Saint George utah for the final stop. It was like a wall of hot air. BAM! Wrapping it up in the darkness of the half moon. Let's burn through the George. High beams on and LEDs glowing. Tapper drops back cause HIDs blind him. Etchasketch is smart and keeps it to the track. Tom is getting old and Jamie and I are young and dumb. It's only getting warmer the closer to the lights of vegas we get. The best gas stop of the day was at our start/stop point. Now we can relax and enjoy the accomplishment. 1030 miles documented boys and girls. Shit, now we have 20 plus miles to go just to get home! Everyone checked In home and safe. Shower and sleep!
If your reading this, then you missed out.
An I already have my Parts ordered. Guess what Tom and I are doing next weekend.... I hope
See you guys around the next curve!
Tom Y
NoNeck
Tapper
Junior
An early start to a grueling hot day. Leaving vegas around 4am. Only current issue was No Neck's everything but the kitchen sink luggage and securement. The 4 of us riding out of vegas in the darkness of the morning. Some shit you would see in a movie......
Tapper routed us through some nice passes from Beatty over to Bishop. And the rubber was laid down. Through Mammoth was nice, until CONSTRUCTION! Woes began from there. Tom started to have charging system issues. And the frustration and exercising begins. We stop for anything and WE get to push the fixxer. The fixxer is losing 0-2 vs oregon trips and its charging system. But, we keep on pushing . Walker pass up to Tahoe was smashing. Literally! Tahoe has epic scenery and roads unless its a summer Saturday. Then fukk Tahoe and its stop and go tourist ridden roads. Down Mt. Rose HWY into Reno. End of day 1.
Day 2 is off to a late start waiting for the parts store to open. Then we ride off into the smoke settled skies of Cali. The boring leg to the otherside of the smoke and into Susanville, to hwy 44. No performance awards given, but much desereved as we got some good carving going on. Just to end up on long and straight tree ridden hwy's. There was much envy from riders along the way knowing were coming from Vegas. We continue our journey with gas n go and a push along the way. Nothing better then smashing the freeway at night and Tom's headlight acting as a strobe light and then going dark completely from time to time. And I was repping the squid glow lights. We had Tapper leading the way, and Junior lighting from behind. We were some sort of night time secretive escort business. Or a rolling rave. Rolled in late and hit the sack! END OF DAY 2

Day 3
Still fighting the fixxer. Diagnosing battery, stator, rectifier and lack of quality tools. Tapper knows where 3 different parts stores are by noon. We made it to cycle gear for some strategic purchases. Hit up sonic where there was no hood rat shit happening. And began day 3's ride. A short jont through the woods to Lincoln city. A couple selfies with the ocean in the background. Turn and burn back to the hotel to beat the sunset so that Tom's lights weren't a factor. Finishing up the night with a much needed drink and food Mexican food. Look out day 4. We got a plan!
Day 4
Up and at it early. +1 bike . Juniors boys are tagging along and then going for a family ride as the rest of us head up the coast. Hwy 18 to hwy 22 towards Hebo was an amazing road. Through Tillamook and into seaside for some fresh lunch. Watch out for market price on the menu! It was worth it. Then we travelled north into Long Beach Wa. Performed some routine chain maintnance and hit the road. A stop here and there for pix then we expressed the use of passing lane on the big ass bridge back to Oregon. We doubled back the same route and smashed down hwy 22 again. Today was a great day of riding. Grub and a beer to follow. End of day 4 . And now that you think day 4 is over, know that Tom waves at scooters. And is concidering a bike change to 49cc..... as he can no longer accept himself. Mass depression is setting in after his scooter waving incident. Show him love and help convince him that its ok and that we all have done it. Lie if you have too. We love Tom and want to help him forget this tragic event.
Day 5
The Trek into central Washington. Easy little ride up through portland to hwy 12. WHITE PASS. Construction here and there. And apparently using the shoulder to manuver through the stopped traffic to the front of the line is frowned upon by the State Patrol. We stopped the entire escort line in the construction zone. To be escorted with party lights. No Neck makes poor judgment calls when in the lead has been confirmed. But after running some info and checking out our sweet bikes. We were mearly warned about the fines and fallowed for a half hour. Then the scenic hwy 12 into central washinton really began. Just mobbing along and enjoying the views and occasional curvy zones. Stopped in to see some family, and a social dinner. Covered parking in a garage tonight.
Were not going to talk about No Necks shame of also waiving at a big scooter on the hwy. I accept my shame. However Tapper and his Vespa waiving is another story. And how he wants to upgrade to a vespa.
End of day 5
Day 6
Leaving Yakima, Wa heading south. Just chilling through the pass and down to the 14. Great views of the columbia river and high desert. We jumped over to the Multnomah Falls, only to be stopped by an ailing gixxer. More diagnosing and troubleshooting to follow..... we have come to the conclusion Oregon has conquered Tom's gsxr. Another tow is on the way. Thank god family is near and can help out. Now that the fixxer is down and out the SHOW MUST GO ON! Historic route 30 had some nasty turns and we got nasty on them. Then wrapped up night 6.

Day 7
Tom is out doing work at the family hotel in long beach. Junior is wrapping up visits with the kiddos in a neighboring town. A stop at cycle gear to pick up luggage and drop off the unnecessary kitchen sink. But, were using today as a chill day to prepare for the ride home.

Day 8
Tom is leaving to meet us in Winnemucca via truck. The other 3 of us are strapping up and preparing for the first leg home. The weather was great until we got to sani em pass. Then good lord it cooled off and mr. heated grips Tapper was the only one laughing. Great scenery and canopy but about 40 miles of chill. Then cruised on into Bend for a stop. The boredom sets in traveling to Burns. 130 miles later WE FOUND TOMMY. Fat kid issues at the chinese joint. Turns out thats a good little Chinese food joint. A local pointed us towards Fields, OR for the bikes and boy was he right. A nice Route with some curves and grades for sure. Don't blink in fields you will miss the gas stop. Continuing on, this leg had the long monotonous straights leading into Winnemucca. We transferred Tom's bike from the inlaws truck to his. And called it a night as we're planning on jumping the heat with a 3am departure. End day 8
Day 9
Up before the roosters. Fuel and go. Damn Winnemucca has 6 gas stations on the main street. It took 5 stations to fill up. First was out of premium, second had their pumps down for maintnance, third closed, fourth has lights and open sign but was closed, and finally the fifth topped off the tank. Now were moving down the road! For the next hour and a half were dealing with 20 degree temperature changes. NO LIE! Pleasant to freezing and so on..... We cruised into Austin for gas and coffee. Then, down to Tonopah was a early morning challenge as the long straights and early start are wearing on the mind and body. Were racing down the 95 against the inevidable heat. We pulled into Beatty and it was 95 at 10 am. So we were in and out and back to trucking down the hwy. It is settling and tiring as we know were in reach of home. Pulling into town exhausted, the sun is starting to beat down at 105. At this point were just managing ourselves to get the last few miles across town to get home.
In summary, Tom's bike needs work, Tapper has luggage breaking but survived, No Neck upgraded luggage and ditched the kitchen sink, Junior is looking good. We all need a bike wash thats for sure.
Tom Y
NoNeck
Tapper

So until the next epic journey, Be jealous Bitches.

the Grand Teton's and Yellowstone Nat'l Park, again!

Took an extended weekend and went for a ride. 1,485 miles in 2.5 days.

Thursday evening, Teton Village Wyoming. The hotel in the background where I stayed had heated tiles in the bathroom.

Grand Teton National Park. If you pay to go through either Yellowstone or the Teton, it's good for both parks.

I've now ridden and entered or exited through all of the Yellowstone entrances, except the north. I have found that the east entrance is the best. The road meanders along the massive Yellowstone Lake and the road leading to the park from Cody Wy was awsome.

Lunch in Cody Wy. When in doubt, eat where the most motorcycles are parked. The historic Irma Building.

Last year I ranked the Rattlesnake Grade as my # 1 road. Not anymore, the Chief Joseph Scenic Bypass coupled with the Beartooth Highway that goes up to 12,000 feet is now 1 on my list.

After spending the night in Bozeman Mt. From Anaconda Mt I headed South
and went through the small town of Wisdom Mt taking Mt. Highway 43 that took me to the Big Hole National Battlefied.

Thanks to Al's Cycle in Hamilton Mt for tightening my chain, no charge! Snake River wanted to charge me $30 and set up an appointment. I ride into Al's Cycle and they got me rolling in 15 minutes.
Lunch in Lolo Mt at Kt's Hayloft.

Lolo Pass. I preferred the Montana side where the speed limit was 70 mph, and it was quite challenging to actually 70 around some of the corners. It was reduced to 50 or 55 on the Idaho side.

This took me through the Northwest Passage Scenic Highway via Id. Hwy 13, another great road. Stopped in Mcall for dinner at Steamers.

Actually the more pleasant part of the ride was between Cascade and Eagle (Id 55). The traffic was zero on a Saturday night, and I was able to ride along the portion that meanders the Payette River at a very brisk pace, with maybe 3-4 sets cars that I came up on which I passed. The traffic was zero on a Saturday night, and I was able to ride along the portion that meanders the Payette River at a very brisk pace, with maybe 3-4 sets cars that I came up on which I passed. It was like my own road.

How should I begin this tale of epic-ness?!

Hmm... I guess at the beginning! 1030 miles in 23 hours. Some of you might ask, "why did it take so long?". There were a few hiccups along the way; a slight detour outside of Susanville that added a few extra, NEEDED miles to the trip.. and a very, very malnourished and tired Matt. Before riding 1000 miles, I recommend a good nights sleep and good eating. Matt can tell you why!

You wont see any pics of the journey up as we were pretty much hauling ass from Las Vegas to Portland. Uneventful until we stopped in Bend (which was about 20 hours into the ride) to visit some of Derick's friends and to mostly give Matt a break and catch up on some much needed rest. After about an hour or so we got back on it and shortly after Bend we entered the very dark and very empty MT. Hood.

There is no other way to describe this next stretch of road as "scary shit".

Which I then had the opportunity of TRYING to stay up with Tomy, who, after seeing we had about an hour/45 minutes to get to our destination decided to ride the fastest that I, or anyone for that matter has ever seen him ride.

I didnt have a working speedometer, and thankfully. But Tomy tells me there were times where we were over 100+ riding through probably, one of the darkest, scariest, non lit and unmarked sections of road, you didn't know what lane you were in at some points and I guess there were TONS of cliffs on some of these long sweepers we were hitting, that if we did see them, we sure as hell wouldn't of been riding like we were...

Derrick had stayed back with Matt because, well, for the most part, Matt was like "FUCK THIS SHIT". lol. They were only about 5 minutes or so behind us so they weren't pussy footing it too much. By the time we exited the mountain and into Madras we had about 30 min to get to Portland....

WHEW. Here we are. Portland, Oregon with 15 minutes to spare!

The first day we spent walking around a flee market/art show that they have every weekend in Portland. Tons of awesome food vendors and they were also having a beer festival that weekend and was something they do every year...pretty sweet place!

THIS WAS JUST THE FIRST DAY!!! We could have spent all day there easily.. and I think next year we should. =D

Shortly after the flee market, Derick took us to meet some of his long time friends, Allah and Justin(pics below)...But, of course, something has to happen...

I take a second to flip my visor to fix my sunglasses for about 3 seconds and abruptly have my head kicked back like I just got hit in the face with a softball.

Giant bug decided to ends its life on my forehead. Fucker. Shit stung for an hour...

But, back to to meeting Dericks friends...

Two of the nicest people I have ever had the honor of meeting. Took 4 strangers into their home, fed us, supplied alcohol and various other party favors. It was awesome to meet more people out there like these two.. and they could ride. It seemed that Justin knew all of the back roads and offered to be our tour guide for the week...It started with Justin taking us out to a road called, "German Town Road".

Holy, crap.

I unfortunately did not have my GOPRO setup this day as I didn't plan on doing any serious riding. But good lord do I ever regret this. This road was absolutely fabulous. It was like a twisty racetrack in a jungle environment. There was a canopy of trees that covered the entire road and every now and then little sunbursts that lit up the road. Just enough to make you feel like you were in another world. Was absolutely gorgeous. Another reason to go again ASAP. This road was only a few miles long, and almost to no places to stop along the way to get pics...very sad =(..

We then continued on what seemed to be, one of THE MOST FUN urban race track/riding sections ever. It was almost like London/Europe type back roads, extremely tight, very bumpy and very very fun. Most of the roads were of cobblestone types so, once we were done, we all stopped to regain feeling in our hands.. lol. It was like riding through a bunch of peoples backyards, with a wall or fence withing 2 feet of you at all times. Very, Very tight.

Shortly after we ended back at Justin and Allah's for some much needed R&R. This was the evening the gang was introduced to Fireball. One of the most glorious alcoholic drinks available. If you have not had the op to try this drink. Go get some now. Epic.

The second day ended up not so fun for some...

Tomy's rectifier/regulator went out as we were heading to Justin and Allahs to start riding for the day. We spent a couple of hours calling places to see if they were open but nothing. We could get the parts shipped and have them by Wed or Thursday. But, we would be leaving Friday. So, this left Tomy a bit uneasy. Luckily, Tomy had some family in Portland that had trailer-ed up and Tomy ended up spending the days with his family and we would go riding. It was a pretty shitty situation. But we made the best of it. And hopefully next year, Tomy can get a chance to see some of the roads we did.

The next few days would consist of Matt,Derick and Myself along with Justin and Allah.. waking up at 7 or 8am. And riding, till about 5-6pm. We would eat, drink, sleep, and be merry. Wake up the next day, repeat. I am at a loss of words how great this entire trip was. It was great to bond with the guys and see sites that I might never have seen before.

We visited MT ST Helens, some waterfalls, the coast, various awesome roads..to much to say, but I can show in pictures instead..

There was two food places that we visited that were def some remembrance points...One being that I decided to take on the challenge of a local restaurant but trying the "El Jefe" Challenge. This challenge was to eat 15 ghost pepper enfused hot wings in 5 minutes or less. This, was, painful. But, to a point where the pain turned euphoric. My only complaint was not the heat of the ghost peppers, but the temperature of the wings when the plop them down infront of me still steaming and say, GO.. The video speaks for itself..

The challenge..

You may notice that Santa Clause looking character. That is because, he is one. And plays one on TV. HAHA That was Justin's father in law I believe. He was an absolute trip. He called me a pussy for only being able to eat 4 wings. He only ate half of one. But he does play as Santa during the holidays and is a world known Santa impersonator..

Another GREAT SCS Members ride. Some very good. Some very not good. All in all, a great weekend. Ten bikes left, ten bikes and their riders made it home. That's good. Lotsa great miles over some always stunning roads. 5 of the 10 riders had never seen Utah before, and it is always a treat to me to see the reactions once they get a grasp on the beauty to be found in So Utah.

Thanx to all who made it. Two in the most improved riding catagory: Wheatie and Falcon. I swept, and led them both several times, and watched the learning process take hold. You guys both rock. Tell us about the "magic ear plugs" Wheatie.

I didn't shoot my usual zillion pics this time. It was a "kickstands up" weekend. Just how I like it. Here's just a couple.

I know a bunch of you got the opportunity to ride the new Z1000 at TWT. I was in LA that day and couldn't go. Fortunately, I got to ride it on Monday from the Rock Store in Malibu. Here is the route:

30354 Mulholland Hwy, Agoura Hills, CA 91301 to Cornell School Rd - Google Maps

I have to start by saying the Z1000 surpassed my expectations. I understand that in order to sell a bike for 10K, now a days, you have to cut a few corners. The end result is usually a slightly underpowered version of it's sport bike brethren. The suspension is usually non-adjustable, brakes weak...etc. Thankfully, none of this was the case with the Z1000.

The first thing I noticed is that it feels, and is, much lighter than my ZRX. I expected the suspension to cry out in pain under the weight of my big butt, and again, it didn't. In fact, I tried to get it to dive hard. I would snap open the throttle then slam it shut just as quickly. The Zed just laughed. It had minimal dive even when grabbing the brakes hard.

One of the first roads we hit was Latigo Canyon Road. This is tight, bumpy road that is full of surprises. The bike handled the multiple and quick side to side changes and never got upset. Trust me I tried. Even when making intentional throttle changes mid corner the bike stayed composed. The Z1000 soaked up all the bumps and never complained.

Power was very linear with a nice bit of torque. I intentionally exited several corners a gear too high and the Kawi pulled hard even from under 3k. It doesn't have the torque my ZRX does, but it is close. Once you got the revs over 8K the power comes on strong, but smoothly. The new Z1000 doesn't suffer from the vibration issues that plagued the previous versions.

Throttle response was very good. Even when getting to a maintenance throttle in mid turn, it was never abrupt. This is very surprising for a bike in this price range. I've ridden far more expensive bikes that didn't have nearly as smooth a throttle response.

The brakes were very linear and predictable. Don't get me wrong, these are not the throw you over the bars brakes that the ZX6/10 are known for, but they get the job done. They are actually far more easy to modulate and brake smoothly. There were a few times were I had to brake hard due to some serious debris in the next corner. The bike got slowed down and the suspension stayed composed.

The transmission is another area that really surprised me. It was VERY smooth. I never hit a false neutral and never felt any clunky shifts. The shifter has a very short throw, so minimal input is required.

The wind protection was also better than expected. Mind you, this is a naked bike. For a naked bike it did a great job of keeping the wind from pulling me off the bike even at speed.

The new Kawasaki Z1000 is a great all around bike. You can just as easily put around town as carve up some corners or even hit up a 500 mile ride. I have to hand it to Kawasaki, they did a great job with the new Z1000. I think a lot of riders would be shocked at how well the bike works, given the opportunity to throw a leg over.

First things first, A big thanks to Las Vegas BMW Motorcycles, for lets us ride the new S1000 rr.

I road the S1000rr thru the Red Rock loop if you are not familiar with it, it is a one way 12 mile loop with some nice twisties. My first impressions were nice well put together bike. The display is well laid out and organized, overall easy to read.

While sitting on the bike it actually felt like a 600 but once you fired it up and started the ride, know your not on a 600. The bike has nice smooth power from way down low all the way to the top. Giving the bike a nice tame feel.

First thing I wanted to try out a full on shift under full power. BMW did a great job and a quick nudge of the shifter and the motor cut out for a mil-sec and your in the next gear. This really works great under full power, easing around in traffic works but you just don't get the full effect unless your under full power

Next thing I wanted to try was the anti lock brakes.. Gave myself a long straight part of the road and grabbed a handful of brakes. You know the kind you grab when a mini van pulls out in front of you. I was impressed I expected some back tire rise but I did not get any. Good job

Then I was off to the twisties.

I pushed the bike a little but not like it was mine. The first thing I noticed was the suspension was noticeably different from mine own my 1000 rr. I ride red rock all the time and I know where the bumps are and what issues I normally have. WOW is all I have to say.. They did a great job.

My overall impression. The big four ( Kawi, Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha )now have to compete with a major sportbike If you are not a squid and want a true sportbike you better consider this one.. even though it is a little pricey

I will post up some Video when I get it of us in the loop, but here is some photos

At the dealership... Yea that's a North Las Vegas Motor officer who came out to drool

For all you guys how stayed home to day you missed out on a great ride and some decent SCS humor.

We met up at Starbucks on Charleston and had coffee and some guy in pink shorts with purple beads tried his best to hit on guys in leather, this made the morning just funny.

We hit up the road and ended up getting pulled over by NHP for 87 in a 75... No performance awards were received and we headed back out on the road.

Quick lunch at St. George and back on the road to Kolob Reservoir road.

This road is going to be a great SCS day trip in the summer, but today it was all snowed in.
